Neat Google Search Feature

by bananalope on Jul.02, 2009, under Tech

Google GSo I was tooling around with Google today, and noticed a neat feature in their search. If you type the name of a celebrity or well known person followed by eye color, the first result is indeed their eye color. This can also be done with other attributes like height, weight, ethnicity, hair color. I wonder what other little nuggets it has about people. I already know about google profiles, but I wonder what else you can search on about a person.

by bananalope on Feb.02, 2009, under Uncategorized

Got my brand new netbook (MSI Wind U100) plus a snazzy 30 gig OCZ SSD to go with it. I'll write up something about them once I've played with them a while

Trying out KDE 4.2RC1

by bananalope on Jan.21, 2009, under Linux/Unix, Uncategorized

kde-logo-crystalSince I started my new job last October, I've been using Linux almost exclusively on my laptop. I still boot to Vista every now and then, but mostly just to make sure it's still working.  My distro of choice is Kubuntu. I've got Intrepid Ibex 64-bit on my HP DV9543CL. My only real issues are the NVIDIA drivers, but that's for another post.

One of the reasons I chose Kubuntu was it shipped with KDE 4.1 and I was excited to see how it was working once they got some of the kinks out. Most everything runs smoothly, but there's the occasional odd thing. (continue reading...)

I want the Asus Eee Keyboard

by bananalope on Jan.09, 2009, under Tech

asus-eee-keyboardI'm always looking for ways to integrate a computer into my living space, but not have it look out of place. The Asus Eee Keyboard is pretty good camouflage, it looks like it's only a keyboard, but it's really a full fledge computer (well, except for a optical drive). It connects wirelessly to your HDTV. For what I'd do with it in my living room (maybe some web browsing, email, etc.) it's not bad.  Of course, now that I've got a bluetooth keyboard and mouse connected to my PS3, maybe I don't need this, but I still want it :)

Groovy New Power Strips

by bananalope on Jan.07, 2009, under Tech

I saw these today on my wanderings around the internets. We definitely need new ideas when it comes to power outlets and power strips. Everything has a different sized plug or wall wart.

Another day

by bananalope on Jan.03, 2009, under Career

See I couldn't even make it a day without breaking my goal. I'm only a few minutes late in posting. I'll post again today though to make up for it.

I'm really going to have to buckle down and become one with my Blackberry. I'm so not used to having one.  Being on call means I'm going to need to keep it on me at all times. It's been so long since I've been on call, and even then I was always in front of my computer or at work, so it didn't really matter too much. Just another habit I've got to get into I suppose.

Luckily, my woman sleeps with  earplugs (something about me snoring too loud?) so when I bring the Blackberry in, she won't hear it in the bedroom when it rings.

For some reason, I'm not so excited about getting the Blackberry, which is kind of odd for me, I used to be a big gadget dude. I used to get all the PDAs when they came out, but my last few phones have been Motorola RAZRs, just plain simple phones that I've grown to love. I still love gadgets, just not as gung-ho as I used to be. I think it's because after the newness wears off, I'm bored with it and move on to the next new thing.

Posting More

by bananalope on Jan.01, 2009, under Uncategorized

So part of my new year goals (I never call them resolutions), is to blog about something at least once a day, even if it's something small. I really want to start getting more involved in blogging, but I just don't have the habit down yet. It's funny the amount of articles I tag and share in Google Reader, you'd think I'd post about them. So I will make a concerted effort to  post once a day (at the least), and more on things that matter to me.

This of course is my cop out post, I did at least post, even though it's not really what I'd call content. I do have several articles I'm going to be working on and posting (aside from the daily postings) so stay tuned for that. I'm also going to tie in my facebook, friendfeed and google reader content as soon as I get time.

New Tab Screen for Firefox?

by bananalope on Aug.26, 2008, under Geekdom, Tech

I found this today while perusing through my feed reader. Aza's got some interesting ideas on what should happen when you open a new tab in Firefox. His ideas are pretty well thought out, like place a search bar in the empty tab window, including results from your awesome bar, contextual actions (did you just copy an address? let me show you a map), and showing sites you routinely visit.

Usually when I'm opening a new tab, it's through middle clicking a link to open in a new tab. I do think the search box will be handy, though. If I use the search bar at the top, I most always want the results in a new tab anyways. I'm all for making the browser smarter, something that learns how you use it and becomes optimized for YOUR workflow.

Welcome to my world.

by bananalope on Aug.25, 2008, under Geekdom

This is the first official post on my blog. Yeah, I signed up a while ago and never used it. I wanted to compare how WordPress stacked up against some of the other blog platforms.

So, now I'm going to use it, temporarily here at wordpress.com, and eventually it will have a permanent home on my domain. I'm currently working on setting up a custom WordPress MU/Buddypress site. Until it becomes even semi-operational, I'll post here and migrate when I'm ready.

Though I've set blogs up for numerous people, this will be my first real attempt at keeping my own blog. I've got tons of ideas for posts, most of which occur to me while driving (unfortunately), but if I can remember to jot the ideas down, it should be a worthwhile read. It should be a mix of observations, opinions, technical & geeky stuff.

I have been recently laid off, but hopefully I won't be out of work for long. I have links to my current resume and LinkedIn profile if you're curious. I can do freelance work as well, I'll add a page soon with more information and rates.

I'm still working on an About page, until then you'd be better off checking my Facebook profile.
